The Art of Creating Your Sanctuary
Your home should be your haven.
If you’re not having the best day, it should be a place you can’t wait to get back to.
Your space should be multifunctional - somewhere you can get creative and have fun in during the day, but also the place where you can get cozy and relaxed in the evening.
Making some small improvements and investing in your space can really make the world of difference to your mindset.
Here’s a few things you can try to jump start this process…
Ambient Lighting
You want interchangeable lighting options. Trust me on this.
I partake in hybrid working and don’t have a home office - so sometimes, I’m in my room all day. Being able to go from bright to ‘moody’ lighting really helps me to section my day and know when to switch off. This is just as applicable for the weekend. You can really enhance the experience of your night routine with a change in lighting.
Whether we’re talking lamps, fairly lights or those LED colour-changing strips… INVEST!
The fairy lights that I have are about four years old and I’m notorious for knocking over lamps. I have recently purchased some LED lights and, whilst they were amazing for a week, they now don’t work! So I am still on the hunt, but once I find some good pieces I’ll be back with the link 😉
Elevate Your Bed
You have not experienced good sleep until you’ve slept on a 12” goose feather and down mattress topper. It feels like you’re lying on a cloud. There’s usually a good deal on Groupon so keep your eyes peeled.
These next two things are MUST HAVES if you’re single or spend a lot of time sleeping alone, but I’d still definitely consider investing in them if you don’t meet that criteria:
A Weighted Blanket
This has helped to reduce my anxiety and improve my quality of sleep TENFOLD!
I got my weighted blanket for Christmas but here’s an example that you can get in either grey or pink:
& here’s a fluffy one:
A Maternity U-Pillow
Now hear me out…
I am not now, nor have I ever been expecting, so this is not a requirement for buying a U-Pillow.
But good Lord, wrap yourself up in one of these things and its like you’re in your own little pillow bubble.
I bought one when I broke up with my ex boyfriend in my final year of University (don’t judge me, I had depression) and my housemate got one two days later. Then her mum and aunt. When my granddad passed away and my grandma was feeling lonely over the winter, I ordered her one too. All of them love it. They are truly the biggest game changer!
I still absolutely rate having one if you live with a partner, but these are a definite gift for any of my friends who’ve found themselves single (tell me your love language is physical touch without telling me your love language is physical touch).
I’ve bought/gifted all of the below and 100% recommend:

Electric blankets or hot water bottles (my Dad bought me a fluffy meter-long one for Christmas & it is exquisite) are another fab shout to make your bed the best and most comforting place to be.
I discovered a lot of these when I was going through the aforementioned breakup and was struggling with sleeping alone. Now, I wouldn’t want to share that space with anyone- so if you’re going through something similar… don’t walk, run to Amazon!
Love Your Kitchen
Your kitchen is an integral part of your living space (I have a post on mindful cooking in the works, so keep an eye out). Invest the time in making your kitchen a clean and inviting place, otherwise you’ll find yourself rushing your food and you may not make the best choices for your body.
My first year kitchen (in shared halls) was a DISASTER, so much so I’d either rush to make a Pot Noodle or just order take out by the end of the year. My kitchen post-University, however, was gorgeous and I filled it with glass jars and cute appliances. I loved being in my kitchen and, unsurprisingly, I was cooking almost every night- it became such an enjoyable part of my day.
A couple of touch ups really can make all the difference, but remember that your home is YOUR SPACE, so make sure you love being in it.
Let me know what you’re going to try first…
